Mammograms

Mammograms are used as a screening test in women without symptoms. They are also used for women who have symptoms that might be from cancer.

A Mammogram can often find or detect breast cancer early, when it is still small. Sometimes a mammogram can find breast cancer even before you feel a lump. When breast cancer is found early, it is usually easier to treat.

Begin screening mammograms at the age of 40 years old - though there are a few factors that indicate you may want to be seen as early as 27 years old. These include a history of family breast cancer, having the BRCA gene, or being of Ashkenazi Jewish descent. 

Yes, to see the whole picture, it is best to always get a breast ultrasound with your mammogram. Especially for women who have dense breasts. 

There is not much you need to do in preparation for a mammogram. We recommend that you do not wear deodorant to your mammogram appointment. Remember to confirm your appointment with us and you are all set!

A mammogram study takes about 15 minutes once in the room with our mammogram technologist. Additional time will include changing into and out of your robe for the study, and meeting with the Radiologist to discuss your results. 

Slight discomfort can be expected. The swiftness of the exam as well as our attentive mammogram technologist will create the best experience for you.
